The world’s best mustard actually comes from Kökar
The Mustard World Championships
Since 1995, the world’s best mustards have been honoured at the prestigious World-Wide Mustard Competition in Wisconsin, USA. Hundreds of mustards from around the globe compete each year in several flavour categories.
The judging is done completely blind – the judges don’t know which brands they are tasting – and the jury consists of chefs, food writers, and other culinary professionals.
In each category, the top three mustards are awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals. The gold medal winners then compete against each other for the coveted title of Grand Champion – the champion of champions.
Gold from the Archipelago
In 2023, Kökar Senap took part in the competition for the first time, in the sweet hot category – the result was gold!
The following year, in 2024, the same mustard won silver, proving that its success was no coincidence.
– The first year I thought maybe I was just lucky. But when I got silver the following year, I realised that the mustard is actually really good, says Olle Dahl.

Grand Champion 2025 – Christmas mustard (Julsenap) takes it all
In 2025, Olle decided to enter another product – Julsenap, a coarse mustard with honey and Christmas spices.
First, it won gold in the sweet hot category – and then the entire competition. Julsenap was crowned Grand Champion – the champion of champions.
– I decided to send in another product because people had praised it so much. And it turned out to be the right decision, says Olle Dahl.
Two world championship titles and a Grand Champion victory prove that the world’s best mustard is indeed made on Kökar, Åland archipelgo – with genuine craftsmanship, precision, and a love for flavor.
